Well, I setup this domain name thinking
about the pirate craze surrounding the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Can you guess what I was planning to do? It was going to be a website
centered around selling gourmet coffee online from around the world.
Around the world meaning anywhere the pirates of old might have traveled to
pillage and plunder!
Get it? Pirate Grind. What
kind of coffee would a pirate drink? Obviously, it would be a Pirate
Grind. But I was going to sell whole beans, not ground coffee. Want
ground coffee? Go the the grocery store where their coffee was ground
months ago (maybe, I don't really know . . .).
Well, guess what? After having that
great idea for a domain name, and grabbing it and it's .net cousin, I started
researching how to distribute coffee. Finding decent deals on great
gourmet coffee wasn't hard. Now marketing? That's a different story.
Market online? Too much competition for a startup like me.
Television? Way to expensive. Magazines? Same thing. Of
course, this was all my personal speculation, I didn't look into any of those
methods. No, my first instinct was to advertise using the radio. You
know how much is costs to get 0:30 seconds of airtime in Los Angeles between
6:00 and 10:00AM? How about $1,360. Outrageous! I assumed I
would be airing radio spots at least five times a day, Monday through Friday.
So, that's twenty-five spots at $1,360 each, or $34,000 a week. How many
one pound shipments would I have to make to break even, at $15.00 per pound
(assuming a $5.00 profit per pound)? I would have to ship 6,800 pounds of
coffee a week!!! . . . to break even!!!
Too much work for that kinda dough.
So, my thinking cap is on. What to
do, what to do. How on earth will I make money with this great website
name? Making money, making money, making money, that's the whole point,
right? Well, mostly the whole point. I mean, if you get an idea for
making money, and make enough of it (Enough money? Are you kidding?
Is there really such a thing?), then you might feel benevolent enough to give a
chunk of that money away to a good cause, or two.
Oh yeah, another thing is, this is my
first foray into my own website. I've never made a website before, and I
speculate that the learning curve may be steep. That's where web authoring
tools come in, they can handle the hard part for me, for now, until I need
something more sophisticated.
At any rate, why not send me some unique
money making ideas for my site. Something not too labor intensive (I've
got a wife and two small children to deal with at home, so my free time is
minimal). Come up with a great idea, that's easy to understand, and
inexpensive to promote. I'll post the best ideas on this site. Then
we can have a vote and pick the best of the best.
Why bother? If you're idea does the
trick, then I'll figure out a way to cut you in on the action! By the way,
include how you would like to be cut in on the action. There are many
different compensation models out there, and I'd like to hear your personal take
on what works for you.
Got a great picture I can use to pretty
up my site? Or, cool fonts I can check out? Send me links to those,
too.
Other than email, I don't know how you
can send me your ideas. Eventually, I'd like to have a way to let you
submit online where your idea is captured in a database that I can check, so I
don't get majorly spammed. Know how to set something like that up?
Tell me!!!
Well, that's all for now! Thanks
for reading.
Yours truly,
Captain Coffee
